Times News Digital was founded in 2018 with a clear mission: to provide authoritative, accurate regional journalism for England at a time when local and regional news organisations were under severe financial pressure.
We believe that regional journalism matters. The decisions made in county halls and district councils, the economic trends that shape regional labour markets, the social changes that affect communities — these stories deserve the same quality of reporting as national politics. We try to provide it.
We cover England's regions with a focus on politics, economics, health, education, transport and the environment. We are not a local paper in the traditional sense — we cover the whole of England — but we approach our subjects with the specificity and depth that local journalism at its best has always provided.
Times News Digital is independent. We have no parent company, no proprietor with political interests and no commercial clients with editorial influence. Our revenue comes from display advertising. Our editorial decisions are made entirely by our editors.
Margaret Thornton — Political Correspondent. Margaret has covered regional and national politics for sixteen years. She is based in Manchester and focuses on the relationship between central government and England's regions.
David Ashworth — Economics Reporter. David covers regional economic trends, labour markets and the cost of living. He previously worked for a regional business publication.
Clare Pemberton — Society Correspondent. Clare's work focuses on voluntary organisations, community institutions and social policy in England's regions.
Tom Hadley — Transport Correspondent. Tom covers transport infrastructure and policy, with a particular focus on the regional disparities in transport investment.
